Family of a Veteran? Join the Legion Family!
American Legion Auxiliary
Who Is Eligible to Join the American Legion Auxiliary?
The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) brings family members of veterans together to honor their service while supporting veterans, military families, youth, and our community.
Under the updated 2026 eligibility requirements, you may be eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary if you are a grandparent, parent, sibling, spouse, or direct or adopted descendant within two degrees of relationship of a member of The American Legion.
You may also qualify through a deceased servicemember who served during an eligible period and died in the line of duty or following an honorable discharge. The qualifying periods of service are:
April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918
December 7, 1941 – Present
The updated rules mean that eligible family members can include grandparents, parents, siblings, spouses, children, and grandchildren, regardless of gender, provided all other eligibility requirements are met.
Women who are eligible for membership in The American Legion based on their own military service also remain eligible to join the American Legion Auxiliary.
If the veteran through whom you qualify is living, they must be a current member of The American Legion, and their membership information will be required. If the qualifying veteran is deceased, documentation verifying their qualifying military service may be required.

Sons of the American Legion
Who Is Eligible to Join the Sons of The American Legion?
The Sons of The American Legion (SAL) gives male descendants of eligible veterans an opportunity to honor their family’s military service while supporting veterans and their local community.
You may be eligible for membership if you are a male descendant, adopted son, or stepson of a member of The American Legion. You may also qualify as the male descendant of a veteran who served honorably during an eligible period and who passed away while serving or following an honorable discharge. Under current American Legion eligibility rules, qualifying service generally includes April 6, 1917 through November 11, 1918 (World War I), or December 7, 1941 to the present.
There is no minimum age to join the Sons of The American Legion. SAL membership includes boys and men of all ages, making it a great way for multiple generations of a family to honor the service of a parent, grandparent, or other qualifying ancestor.
